We recommend a minimum age of 4 years for the Bromo jeep tour and Sea of Sand experience. The jeep ride is bumpy but not unsafe, and young children find it exciting. Horse riding on the Sea of Sand is suitable from age 3–4 with a handler accompanying. The crater stairs (253 steps) are suitable from around age 6–7 for most children, but are optional — many families choose to skip the stairs and spend more time on the Sea of Sand instead.
For families with children under 8, we recommend the sunset tour. It departs in the early afternoon (around 12pm), reaches Bromo at golden hour (4–5pm), and returns to the hotel by 8pm. Temperatures are warmer (15–20°C vs 5–10°C at sunrise), no 2am wake-up is required, and children are energised rather than exhausted. The caldera views at sunset are equally spectacular — and far less crowded. For children aged 8+, the sunrise tour is a memorable experience that older kids often love for the sense of adventure.
Yes. Children aged 5 and below who share a room and car seat with their parents can join at a significantly reduced rate or in some packages at no charge. From the second child or where a separate bed or seat is needed, standard rates apply. Yes. Mount Bromo is one of the most accessible volcano experiences in the world. The jeep takes you very close to the crater base, and horse riding removes the walking requirement entirely. The viewpoint road is paved and accessible by jeep to within 100m of the viewing area.
The essentials for children: warm layered clothing (10–15°C at sunrise, so a fleece plus windbreaker and a beanie), closed-toe shoes or light hiking boots (the crater walk involves sand and stone steps), high-SPF sunscreen (the high altitude intensifies UV), snacks and a water bottle (food options are limited before 9am), and a face mask (volcanic ash can irritate young lungs near the crater). We send all booked families a detailed family packing checklist. Jacket and scarf rentals are available at the viewpoint if you forget warm layers.
Yes. Horse riding on the Sea of Sand is a gentle, flat ride with handlers walking alongside. Children as young as 4 ride it comfortably. It’s consistently one of the top highlights for kids on the Bromo experience.
The walk from the jeep drop-off to the crater involves approximately 1.5 km of flat sandy terrain followed by 253 steps to the crater rim. The flat section is easy and enjoyable for most children — the sandy Sea of Sand is the part they love most. The stairs can be challenging for children under 6 or those with limited energy. Our guides always assess on the day — many families choose to walk to the base of the stairs and return, which is still a spectacular experience. Horse riding is available for the flat section for children who prefer not to walk.
Babies and toddlers under 3 can join the jeep tour and visit the viewpoints, but the early-morning cold (as low as 5°C at the viewpoint before sunrise) requires careful preparation. We recommend carrying a baby in a carrier with a warm outer layer covering both parent and child. The sunset tour is strongly recommended for parents with babies or toddlers.
