Useful answers to common questions about private Mount Bromo day tours, including tour options, travel planning, inclusions, and what to expect before your trip
Every private Bromo day tour we offer is all-inclusive: private return transportation from your hotel in Surabaya or Malang, a dedicated 4WD jeep for the Sea of Sand crossing, a professional English-speaking guide, and all national park entrance fees. Because the tour is fully private, you will not share your jeep or vehicle with other travellers — your group sets the pace. Optional add-ons such as horse riding across the Sea of Sand and a Milky Way photography session are available at an extra cost.
The drive from Surabaya to the Mount Bromo area (Cemoro Lawang) takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic. For sunrise tours, your driver will pick you up from your Surabaya hotel around midnight (12:00-01:00 am) to ensure you arrive at the Penanjakan viewpoint before the sun rises at approximately 05:30 am. From Malang, the journey is slightly shorter at around 2.5 to 3 hours, with midnight pick-up times also applying.
Yes — we offer daily departures and can often accommodate bookings made 24 to 48 hours in advance, subject to guide and vehicle availability. For same-day bookings, please contact us directly via WhatsApp at +65 8171 1149. We recommend booking at least 2-3 days ahead during peak travel season (June to August and December to January) to secure your preferred departure city and date.
Mount Bromo is located within the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park in East Java, Indonesia. It sits inside the vast Tengger Caldera at 2,329 metres above sea level, alongside four other volcanoes: Mount Batok, Mount Kursi, Mount Watangan, and Mount Widodaren. The nearest major city with an international airport is Surabaya (SUB), approximately 3–4 hours by road. Malang is also a popular starting point, roughly 2.5–3 hours away. On our private day tours, all transport is handled for you — we pick you up directly from your hotel or the airport.
The dry season from April to November offers the clearest skies and best sunrise visibility — this is the ideal window for a Bromo day tour. July and August are peak months, with the highest chance of a sharp, cloud-free sunrise from the Penanjakan viewpoint. The wet season runs December to March; the national park remains open and tours operate, but morning mist and occasional rain can partially obscure the views. That said, a misty Bromo has its own dramatic atmosphere, and many guests find it memorable regardless. You can visit during public holidays and local festivals — the park does not close for these events.
Before sunrise, temperatures at the Penanjakan viewpoint can drop to 10-15°C — colder than most visitors expect. By mid-morning, it warms to a comfortable 20–30°C. We strongly recommend dressing in three layers: a moisture-wicking base layer, a thick fleece or wool mid-layer, and a windproof outer jacket. Add a beanie, scarf, and light gloves, all of which you can remove as the sun rises. If you don’t have warm gear, local vendors at the viewpoint rent jackets for around USD 3-5 (IDR 20,000–50,000) per piece. Sturdy closed-toe shoes or hiking boots are recommended for the crater walk.
Mount Bromo is an active volcano that occasionally experiences periods of elevated activity, but it is regularly monitored by Indonesia’s Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG). The national park and tour operations are only open when the alert level permits safe visitor access. All our tours are subject to the current official alert status — if activity increases and access is restricted, we will notify you immediately and offer a full reschedule or refund. Our guides carry communication equipment and are trained in safety protocols. Tens of thousands of visitors safely tour Bromo every year.
The walk to the Mount Bromo crater is moderate and suitable for most fitness levels, including beginners. After crossing the Sea of Sand by jeep, you walk approximately 1.5–2 km across relatively flat sandy terrain to the base of the volcano, followed by a 253-step staircase to the crater rim. The entire route is manageable for healthy adults aged 5 to 70. If you prefer not to walk, horse riding is available across the Sea of Sand for an optional fee. For guests on our Mount Ijen tours, the hike is more demanding — a 2–3 hour ascent with steep inclines, best suited for those aged 12–65 and in good health.
On a private tour, your group has exclusive use of the vehicle and guide — no strangers, no waiting for others, and complete flexibility over your pace and photo stops. Pick-up is from your own hotel at a time that suits your group. A join-in (shared) tour groups you with other independent travellers, usually at a lower per-person cost, but with a fixed itinerary and shared pick-up points. Private tours are ideal for couples, families, groups of friends, and anyone who wants a more personal or flexible experience. Our private day tours start from SGD 89 per person, varying by departure city and package.
