Mount Bromo

Mount Bromo (Indonesian: Gunung Bromo), is an active volcano and part of the Tengger massif, in East Java, Indonesia. At 2,329 metres (7,641 ft) it is not the highest peak of the massif, but is the most well known. The massif area is one of the most visited tourist attractions in East Java, Indonesia. The volcano belongs to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The name of Bromo derived from Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu creator god. (Wikipedia)

Mount Ijen

The Ijen volcano complex is a group of composite volcanoes in the Banyuwangi Regency of East Java, Indonesia.
It is inside a larger caldera Ijen, which is about 20 kilometres wide. The Gunung Merapi stratovolcano is the highest point of that complex. The name “Gunung Merapi” means “mountain of fire” in the Indonesian language (api being “fire”); Mount Merapi in central Java and Marapi in Sumatra have the same etymology. (Wikipedia)

Mount Bromo & Mount Ijen Tour – Start with Bromo (3D/2N)

4.57 out of 5 based on 7 customer ratings
  1. Elizabeth Tan

I went on the tour on the 1st -3rd April. I find this a very fast and convenient way to visit the 2 volcanoes. The drawback was that I had to pay for the entrance tickets and I find it difficult to be able to money exchangers along the way.

Nonetheless, the price is competitive and is definitely sufficient for a weekend trip.

  2. Gabriel Lim

We went on this trip over last weekend. We weren’t able to get an accommodation because it was a long weekend but Alex planned and upgraded us to a relatively nice hotel in Surabaya. Even though, it was different from our plan , we appreciate the added service that the company gave to us so we can continue the journey.

Will recommend the tour to my friends.

  3. Ryan Teo

I find the prices on this website very competitive. However, I feel the homestay option could be improved. I was wondering if there is somewhere in between the resort and the homestay option.

  4. Racheal

Went on this trip ion 14th-16th May 2017. It is pretty good and I really enjoyed the trip. The homestay wasn’t very ideal but is bearable if you have the expectation of travelling to a village.

It wasn’t a very tiring trip. Ideal for friends and backpacking.

  5. Melinda

The agent (& Alex): At the start we were a little hesitate with online agent to Bromo as many of them may be fake but once I read the reviews & blog with the help of Alex’s efficient services in answering my queries, it certainly helped us decide if we should go ahead. No regrets.

    The trip: 03-05 January 2018.

The driver: Mr Richard was really nice; helpful & his English is really great.

The hotel: We stayed at Bromo Terrace Hotel and El Royale Hotel. The hotels were great but you only stay for few hours as the tours start very early in the morning.
Feedback for El Royale Hotel~ The hotel is new and they are still building another wing so make sure to request a room that is far from the construction sites because the construction goes till 10pm and you can hear them banging & drilling. When you need to sleep for an early start, banging & drilling is just silly.

Tour start & finish time: Bromo ~ Be prepared to start very early in the morning (12-1am start).

Driving time: Surabaya Airport to Bromo is about 3-4 hours. From Bromo to Banyuwangi (Ijen) is approximately 6-7 hours.

The physical rating: Bromo is easy (with 240 stairs to go to the top), but make sure you are fit to do a steep hike for 3km to Ijen, these sites are AMAZING!

Recommendation: If you have some spare $$, book a flight back from Banyuwangi to Surabaya. The flight only takes about 50mins, compare to if you drive back to Surabaya which is about 9 hours. You may not want to sit in the car for 9 hours, after 12am start & steep 3km hike to Ijen on the same day.

  6. DPohCH

We wanted a short weekend getaway with a little bit of adventure, and this tour gave us exactly that!

The land journey from Juanda Airport is long, and it was good to have a break to enjoy the Nadakaripura Waterfall (HIGHLY recommended). Bring along a pair of slippers (& raincoat or you can buy it there for IDR 5k) unless you want to get your shoes or yourself wet… My son & I chose to feel the water falling directly above us, and we cannot help but admire the beauty and the wonders of nature.

The next morning, we thoroughly enjoyed the ride on the jeep and horse riding on route to climb the steps up Mount Bromo. Hiking Mount Ijen in the wee hours of the morning is a little adventure by itself, and coming down is more difficult than going up!

Alex, our Singapore coordinator, was very responsive and answered all our queries even before we departed to Surabaya. The local guides were very experience, patient and very helpful, tending to our needs.

One suggestion, if possible, is to avoid the land journey from Bromo to Ijen. We departed Bromo at 1130am and did not arrive at the beautiful hotel (El Royale Ijen) until 830pm. As we have to get up after midnight for the hike up Mount Ijen, we did not really have the time to enjoy what this hotel can offer.

  7. zieus007

We wanted a short nature with adventure trip and this really fits our bill. We booked for the 3d2n trip and i got a birthday cake at one of the hotel stay as my wife had indicated when she booked the trip.
Some last min change to the itinerary due to Ljen closing but no matter, we just went on the reverse direction. We totally under-estimate the Ljen hike and the weather. The hike really literally took our breadth away, but so did the sunrise and the views when we reach the crater. the weather was probably ard 5 degrees celsius but we are soon sweating from the climb. it is really dusty so bringing mask is a must! bring along headlights as it is totally dark and hiking down the crater has some dangers so be careful and follow your guide. only 1way up and down so it is really crowded with people hiking up and hiking down and having to make ways for the miners.
after the ljen hike, we continued on the bromo part and the milky way tour. we are rather disappointed as we could not see the milky way that night but then no one can guarantee that. the wait for the sunrise at bromo vantage point is cold but the bromo hike is easy with horses helping u, with a fee of cos. Again, mask mask is a must!!
lastly is the waterfall, which surprisingly is nicer than expected. it is ard 10mins walk to the site, and it feels just like aircon temperature. can take lots of photos there. overall the trip is tiring as your activities start at night and probably ends ard 8am but is a good way to see nature. oh the hotels provided by the tour is quite nice and comfortable too but resting time in the hotel is very short so make the full use of your time sleeping.
another tip is to stay 1 more night in surabaya aft the tour as the tour ends quite late and u will be too tired to take a night flight back home. and Thx to the coordinator Alex for the quick responses and the cake.
